Compare prices, do things ahead of time and, above all, choose coverage that adapts to the needs and peculiarities of the driver.

In Spain, there are just over 18 million homes and almost 28 million registered vehicles. There is no escape: the car insurance policy appears as a fixed expense in almost every household. Fixed by inevitable, but not immovable. At least the damage can be smoothed out. There are some tips for saving on car insurance.

1. Pay attention to the calendar

To succeed with the renewal of car insurance, first of all, you must ask yourself if you want to change company. For the price, for discontent, or for whatever reason. If the answer is yes, you are obliged to cancel your policy at least 30 days in advance. The legislation establishes it as follows: «The parties may oppose the extension of the contract by means of a written notification to the other party, made with a period of at least one month in advance of the conclusion of the current insurance period when whoever is opposes the extension to be the policyholder, and two months when it is the insurer.

2. Cancel the insurance

Even if you have no intention of changing companies, cancel the insurance. It is a slightly cumbersome procedure, but it is more than likely that they will call you to offer you a better deal. Keep in mind that if you have been with them for many years you could lose bonuses by doing this. Check it out first, but usually almost everyone benefits.

3. Compare prices

Do not get carried away by inertia or by sensations, because there are companies that seem cheaper than they are. Compare the prices of several companies: online comparators make it quite easy for you. Use the comparators: try putting your data in more than one, you may be pleasantly surprised.

4. Try to be a good driver

This point is entirely up to you. To pay less for car insurance, you must show that the insurer will take few risks with you. The more fines you have in your name (especially if they are for speed), the worse. And the more parts that appear in your history the worse, obviously.

5. Choose the coverage that suits you

The price of the insurance policy depends on the coverage it offers, which should never be higher than what we need. Definitely, it is not always worth taking out comprehensive insurance. As a general recommendation: up to the third year, insurance without excess. Between the third and fifth year, insurance with a franchise, and from there the coverage should go down. It may be worth paying only the mandatory third-party insurance after the tenth year, but adding protection for windows, fire, and theft does not usually raise the price much. Rate it.

6. Take out various insurances

Either in your own company or in a new one, ask about the possibility of contracting several policies at the same time. If you also pay for home insurance, life insurance, or health insurance, you will probably get a better rate.

7. Do not fraction the payment

If you have the possibility to pay in one go, do it: companies usually offer discounts in that circumstance and, on the contrary, installment payments can carry a surcharge. This is not always the case, so check it out first.

8. Lying to the company?

As a trick, it can be one of the most widespread, but it is not always recommended. The policies are cheaper when the cat sleeps in the garage, when the drivers are married and when the cars do not equip extras. If you declare what it is not, you will save something, but you will stop being covered in part. In the event of theft, for example, the compensation will be deducted from the proportional part that should have been paid. There are more serious consequences: if there is an undeclared habitual driver or the insurance is put in the name of another person when the driver is under 26 years of age, the company can cancel the contract declaring data false (without returning the premium).

9. Beware of extras

If this is going to be your first insurance and you have not yet bought the car, keep in mind that the most powerful models with the greatest amount of extras always pay more for car insurance.

10. Choose a gasoline engine

The fuel for a car is rarely chosen based on the insurance to be purchased, but gasoline models pay lower rates than diesel.
