Apple iPhone 14 Plus is now reaching customers who pre-ordered the handset. Here’s a quick look.
It has been more than a month since the iPhone 14 series came out to the world and so far things have looked strange. For the first time in a long time, it’s the iPhone 14 Pro models that are in more demand than the standard model, courtesy of “real” generational upgrades. The standard iPhone 14 is supposed to beef up the iPhone 13 – it has the same chipset as last year’s iPhone 13 Pro. So, the only non-Pro variant of the iPhone 14 series is all we have been waiting for, the iPhone 14 Plus.
Yes, Apple has finally made a comeback to “plus” sized iPhones with this year’s iPhone 14 series. Except for the “mini” dimensions, the iPhone 14 Plus is the exact opposite of the phone it replaces. It’s as big as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but has the same class of components as the iPhone 14. Starting from Rs. 89,990, is this non-Pro iPhone 14 that you must buy? It will take us a few weeks to answer this question but for now, let’s take a look at the iPhone 14 Plus.
iPhone 14 Plus Quick Look: What’s New
The most obvious change here is size. Compared to the iPhone 14’s handy dimensions, the iPhone 14 Plus is huge. It has a massive 6.7-inch display and that means the phone feels like a phablet. However, a fat weight does not come with a large size. Yes, the iPhone 14 Plus is heavy in every way but at 203 grams, it feels lighter than the 240 grams bulk of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This is where the aluminum frame helps.
Other than the size, the iPhone 14 Plus looks like any other iPhone we’ve seen in the past. In just a few hours, the build quality is as remarkable as all the other non-Pro iPhones we’ve seen so far. The back glass is shiny and I love the purple shade on this one. The diagonal iPhone 13-esque camera helps identify this Plus being, while the display notch on the front is a reminder that you’re still a mere mortal of the Apple universe.
For the rest of the package, you still get a USB-C to Lightning cable and some paperwork in the box. Oh yes, the Apple sticker is there too. We also have Purple Silicone MagSafe Case for iPhone 14 Plus and it has the same shade of Purple to complement the handset.
Features of iPhone 14 Plus at a glance
After the first boot up, the iPhone 14 Plus reminds you of its hierarchy in the iPhone 14 lineup. The 6.7-inch display is Apple’s Super Retina XDR. There is an OLED display but it defaults to the standard 60Hz refresh rate. Coming from the Promotion Display on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, it feels clunky and uncomfortable. In fact, coming from any modern day Android phone, 60Hz refresh rate looks unpleasant to the eyes. And no, there’s none of the “Apple’s 60Hz Android is better than 120Hz” thing here — the animations are fluid but the keen eye can notice all the time, especially when unlocked.
Here’s the A15 Bionic chip running from last year’s iPhone 13 Pro, and so far, it seems to be as fast as the A16 Bionic on the Pro variant. I think this chip will only show the difference in benchmarking apps and platforms, with 6GB of RAM helping in multitasking. There’s a lot to see here, it seems.
The cameras got an upgrade from the iPhone 13 – the rear cameras are taken from the iPhone 13 Pro while the front camera has an autofocus lens. The Photonic engine is also present here and we’ll have to see how much you’re going to lose in comparison to the cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Battery life is where Apple makes big promises and that’s what we’re looking forward to seeing. Best battery life of any iPhone? We will see how it handles the daily load. Will it beat the iPhone 14 Pro Max?
The iPhone 14 Plus is a great iPhone for those who want to stay in a budget of Rs. Don’t miss out on 1 lakh and bigger screen displays. In the coming days, I will test the phone and observe its acclaimed “best battery life”. Keep an eye out for our full review.
