After a gap of many years in the country, inflation is once again haunting the people. Retail inflation reached a 7-month high in January and went outside the target range of the Reserve Bank (RBI). Wholesale inflation has been more than 10 percent for several months. Meanwhile, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), one of the largest FMCG companies, has increased the prices of soaps and surfs for the second time this year. After this other companies can also increase the price of their surf-soap.

According to market analyst firm Edelweiss, Hindustan Unilever has increased the price of surf and soap by 3 to 10 percent this month. The company has also increased the price of surf-soap in January. Hindustan Unilever sells popular products like Lux, Rexona, Ponds, Surf Axel, Vim Bar, which are used at home. Prices of Lux, Rexona, Ponds and Surf Axel have been hiked this month.

Avneesh Roy, Executive Director, Edelweiss Financial Services, said, “Our channel checks reveal that Surf Excel has increased the prices of several products including Easy Wash, Surf Excel Quick Wash, Vim Bar & Liquid, Luxe, Rexona, Ponds Powder. The company had last month increased the prices of wheel detergents, pears soap and surf axle. The price of Surf axle has been increased this time as well.

Hindustan Unilever has been increasing the prices almost every month since October last year. In November 2021, it had increased the prices of 1 kg of wheel detergent by 3.4 per cent. In December, the company had increased the prices of Lifebuoy soap, Lux soap, Surf Excel detergent soap and Rin detergent soap by 7-13 per cent.

According to Edelweiss estimates, Hindustan Unilever’s products became costlier by 8 per cent year-on-year in the October-December quarter. However, even after increasing the price, there was no effect on the company’s sales nor did the market share decrease. Hindustan Unilever currently dominates the surf and soap market. Even after increasing the price, the company was assured of making its goods more expensive due to the lack of sales.
