Former India opener Virender Sehwag is celebrating his 44th birthday. On this occasion, cricketers and fans are wishing this legend a happy birthday. Sehwag was counted among the aggressive players of the world, who had the ability to win matches on his own. Sehwag made a splash in international cricket. Even in domestic cricket, he used to take a lot of news of bowlers.
An innings of 187 runs was played against Punjab.
In this episode, Sehwag’s innings of 187 runs in the 1999-2000 Ranji season against Punjab is still in the minds of the fans. The special thing is that during that innings, the match had to be stopped for some time due to the fear of Sehwag. Sehwag shared the story of that innings with sports journalist Joy Bhattacharya. Now Joy has remembered that story.
In that season, the team of Punjab used to have players like Yuvraj, Vikram Rathod, Harbhajan Singh and Sarandeep. Batting first, Punjab had scored 530 runs in the match played in Ludhiana. Then it was Delhi’s turn to bat. Delhi had lost five wickets for 241 runs when Sehwag came down the order due to unwell. Well it did not affect Sehwag and he started sending the balls across the boundary.
Taught cricket lesson to Dinesh Mongia
In such a situation, Dinesh Mongia asked captain Vikram Rathod to give him the ball. Viru was completely beaten on his first ball, after which Mongia took a jibe at his other bowlers and said that the ball should be bowled like this. Mongia’s joy soon faded away as Sehwag hit two lofty sixes off his deliveries. Before the next ball was bowled, a fielder from Punjab stopped Dinesh from bowling.
…then the match had to be stopped
When Dinesh Mongia asked why this was the case, the fielder said that some school children were passing in the direction of long-on, so one of them could be hurt by Viru’s next six! Sehwag had scored 187 runs in 175 balls in that innings, which included 20 fours and 9 sixes. Thanks to his innings, Delhi’s team was able to reach the score of 527 runs.
