India vs West indies Rishabh Pant T20 Series: India’s wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant said that the team plans to try out as many options as possible ahead of the T20 World Cup to be held in eight months. Pant, who was appointed the vice-captain of the Indian team for the ongoing series against the West Indies in the absence of Lokesh Rahul, scored a flamboyant half-century during India’s eight-run victory in the second match on Friday night.
When Pant was asked about the plans for the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia, he said after the match, “There is still time left in the World Cup so our plan is to try as many options as possible.”
“We are trying to find out which position suits whom and how they can benefit the team. We are trying many options, in the end what is right for the team will be the final decision.
The fast bowling pair of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have been rested for the series. In his absence, pacer Harshal Patel kept India victorious despite Rovman Powell’s two consecutive sixes in the final over. Pant said that the team’s plan was to keep the ball outside the off-stump. He said, “After hitting two sixes, there was talk that he would try to keep the ball outside the off-side but in the end he worked according to his strong side.”
Pant said, “Obviously there was a lot of pressure in the match but as individual players we focus on our skills instead of thinking too much.”
With injury-ravaged Hardik Pandya unavailable, India are trying to use fast bowling all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer as a finisher. He played an innings of 33 runs in 18 balls in the second match and with Pant, adding 76 runs in 35 balls, played an important role in taking the team’s score to 186 runs for five wickets. When asked about securing a place in the team by batting at number five, Pant said, “It is part of the team plan. As an individual player, I don’t think whether I have to secure this spot or the other.
India now have another spin option in the form of googly specialist Ravi Bishnoi, 21. Bishnoi took two wickets for 17 runs while making his debut in the first T20, for which he was adjudged the man of the match. In the second match, he took one wicket for 30 runs and Pant was constantly talking to this young player from behind the wicket. He said, “The most important thing for a new player in the team is to give him confidence. The more confidence you give him, the more important it is.”
