Kaiser Focus: Sony and Microsoft’s Battle Is a Popcorn Movie

Watching two big companies fight in legal proceedings is some of the most amusing things you can find as a news writer. Before starting this job, I would have thought legal documents would be boring – or vice versa, I’ve since discovered. Companies’ legal teams happily take passive-aggressive (and sometimes even-aggressive) attacks on each other. This week, my entertainment of choice is the Sony-Microsoft argument over the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s investigation.

I can’t make this stuff. Microsoft accuses CMA of “[adopting] Sony’s complaints without a proper level of critical review. Sony said of CMA’s investigation, “We want to guarantee that PlayStation gamers continue to have the highest quality gaming experience, and we appreciate CMA’s focus on protecting gamers.” I am sure both these companies can sort it out in a similar manner and status quo will be restored. But seeing so much public controversy between these two companies, I’m reaching for my popcorn. I haven’t had that much fun since Epic Games vs Apple Legal Documents.

In other news, Meta has revealed its latest big rig for your face: the Meta Quest Pro. Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg was mostly selling it as an enterprise device, not so much on its gaming potential. That’s probably why it didn’t actually reveal many VR games at the event. The VR among us looks promising, though — it’s one thing to see your little avatar roaming dark corridors, but it’s quite another to actually navigate those claustrophobic environments yourself.

On my side, apart from a few other games whose titles I can’t reveal yet (*wink*), I decided to give Coral Island a try. We know from earlier this year that we’re about to be inundated with farming sims, and Coral Island — which is still in early access but available to Game Pass subscribers — is one of the early salvos. It’s, like all farming sims, basically Harvest Moon (I guess the genre should be named, at this point, like Soullike or Roguelike), but it’s also pretty and catchy in its own way.
