Russia and Ukraine accuse each other
Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of shelling the site of Europe’s largest nuclear plant. The nuclear plant’s buildings have been damaged in this accident. The International Atomic Energy Agency is pushing for a security zone to be established to prevent further shelling. The agency said that even though six of Zaporizhzhya’s reactors have shut down, the nuclear fuel in them still needs to be cooled to prevent a nuclear explosion. This requires a constant supply of electricity.
International Atomic Energy Agency expressed displeasure
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said the shelling on the only external power source of the Zaporizzia plant was “extremely irresponsible”. The Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant must be protected and secured. The IAEA confirmed Ukrainian nuclear regulator Energoatum’s claim that the firing that took place at around 1 p.m. shut down the main 750 kilovolt line supplying external power to the Zaporizhzhya plant. In such a situation, the plant has been switched to a diesel generator. The IAEA said all safety systems at the plant are receiving power and operating normally.
IAEA chief talking to Russia and Ukraine on peace
IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi is in talks with Russia and Ukraine on setting up a security zone around the plant. He declined to say what exactly it would include or how it would be implemented. He was in Kyiv on Thursday and is due to travel to Russia early next week. Grossi said that I will soon visit the Russian Federation and then return to Ukraine to agree on a nuclear safety zone around the plant.
