The US has announced an additional arms and other military assistance of $ 725 million or $ 72.50 million to Ukraine. The White House made this announcement after meetings of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). At the meetings, defense leaders in Europe and around the world agreed to provide Ukraine with weapons and air defense systems as Russia’s bombardment in Kyiv and other areas increased.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that this aid is being given to avoid increasing missile attacks and atrocities by Russian forces on Ukrainian citizens. The Defense Department issued a statement saying that the new package includes ‘High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems’ (HIMARS ammunition).
Ukraine needs urgent help
The Defense Department said in a statement that Ukraine urgently needed additional air defenses. Russia has launched hundreds of rockets on major cities in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have had some success shooting down these missiles, but they need to strengthen their air defense capabilities.
A senior defense official told media at the Pentagon that Russia had recently fired more than 80 missiles at Ukrainian targets in 24 hours and that Ukraine’s air defense system was capable of intercepting half of those missiles.
America has given 20 HIMARS to Ukraine
America has sent 20 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) to Ukraine. And has promised to give 18 more HIMARS in the coming time. HIMARS has proved to be an important weapon for Ukraine, which has emboldened Russian troops by destroying Russian ammunition depots, bridges and other key targets. The US official said the new US package aims to provide thousands of rounds of ammunition for large-scale weapons systems.
